Your log book (V5C) proves youโre the registered keeper of the vehicle โ and when you sell your car to us, itโs your responsibility to let the DVLA know that youโve sold it to a motor trader.
Whether your car is being collected for scrap, salvage, or as a higher-value vehicle, the process is simple and important.
Hereโs what you need to do with your V5C when selling to a trader:
- Fill out Section 9 of the V5C (or Section 4 on newer log books issued after April 2019). This section is for selling or transferring the vehicle to a motor trader, insurer, or dismantler.
- Include the details of the car dealer buying your car โ weโll send you these details in your post-collection email so you can fill this out accurately.
- Send this completed section to the DVLA as soon as possible. You can do this by post or notify the DVLA online.
๐ Notify the DVLA online here
Once the DVLA has been notified, youโll receive confirmation, and any remaining tax will automatically be refunded.
๐ก Top tip: Before your car is collected, take a photo of your V5C front cover and both inside pages. This makes it easy to reference the document reference number if you need it later.
โ ๏ธ Important: Until you notify the DVLA, you are still legally responsible for the car โ so make sure this step is done!
